E-learning: collection, sorting, and recycling of packaging
You can significantly influence recyclability during the packaging design process. This is known as 'design-for-recycling.' It is one of the factors to consider when working on sustainable packaging. To make informed choices, it helps to understand how packaging is collected, sorted, and recycled after use.

Why is good packaging recyclability important?
We are moving from a linear economy, through a recycling economy, to a circular economy. Ideally, a circular economy generates no waste: products and materials remain within the loop. To achieve this, packaging must be highly recyclable. In a recycling economy, it is often difficult to maintain the quality of recycled materials at a maximum level, meaning that producing new packaging still requires a high percentage of virgin raw materials. We want to avoid this.
If you consider recyclability during the design and production phases of packaging, you influence three factors: how the product is used, when and how the user discards the packaging, and whether that packaging waste can be effectively sorted and recycled into new raw materials.

As a follow-up to the ‘Waste Processing and Recycling’ e-learning module, we developed a more technical module focusing on the sorting and recycling processes for plastic packaging. You will learn about the fundamental techniques used to sort and recycle plastic packaging. This way, you will learn about the impact of packaging design on various sorting and recycling processes.
