E-learning: R-strategies
When you want to make a product-packaging combination more sustainable, you can employ various sustainability strategies. By following these so-called "R-strategies," you learn to consider factors such as material selection, the usage phase, and the optimal end-of-life stage. The ultimate goal is to minimize environmental impact and achieve a circular economy for packaging materials.

Watch the animation video below to get an idea of the different R-strategies and how they relate to one another.
Why are the R-strategies important?
In the Netherlands, our current focus is primarily on making product-packaging combinations (more) recyclable and incorporating recycled content into new products and packaging. Innovation is required to move further towards a circular economy. In a circular economy, waste ceases to exist; instead, every raw material is reused for new applications. This keeps products and materials circulating within the loop. Applying R-strategies challenges you to rethink material usage and collaborate smartly with all other parties in the packaging value chain. Reduce, Recover, Recycle, Resource, Reuse, and Rethink: these strategies can be used individually, in combination, or in conjunction with one another. But what does this mean for your specific packaging?
